The NHIA, cooperating with the internationally renowned academic publisher Springer Nature, has published the English-language book Digital Health Care in Taiwan- Innovations of National Health Insurance in open access. The electronic version of the book has been published on August 15th, 2022, and is already available for download. The book fosters communications and exchanges with foreign public health experts, scholars and health officials, helping them better understand Taiwan’s NHI, and serving as an important reference for other countries to build their own digital medical service systems.

Dr. Po-Chang Lee, Director General of the NHIA, said that Digital Health Care in Taiwan was a collaborative effort from multiple staff at the NHIA. It tells of Taiwan’s experience, especially in using technology to transform its health services and taking part in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. Specifically, the NHIA has combined a variety of digital services, including the existing NHI medical information system, NHI MediCloud, My Health Bank, Virtual NHI Card, and the NHI APP, providing the public with convenient, holistic, and integrated services.

Digital Health Care in Taiwan marks the first time the NHIA has published a book with open access through the distribution platform of an internationally renowned publisher. It also presents the successful efforts of the NHIA in digital transformation and development, achievements which are the pride of the people of Taiwan. Written in 12 chapters, the book outlines the principles and results of balancing the NHI finances, medical services, coverage of drugs and medical devices, point adjustments, the user co-payment system that is just now being rolled out, various holistic services, and policies for the disadvantaged. Director General Po-Chang Lee hopes to use the opportunity of this book to explain health care reform and achieve a vision equally advantageous for doctors and patients, and to appeal to the medical community and the public to work together to cherish resources and achieve sustainable health care.
