Aiming to improve specialist medical services on outlying islands, Far Eastern Memorial Hospital has provided weekly dermatological telemedicine since August 2021. The services have allowed 13,000 residents in Lianjiang County to benefit from the dermatological diagnostic and treatment services of the medical center, alleviating chronic itching and eczema for elderly patients with diabetes, and kidney disease, eczema, helping young people with dermatitis and acne, and patients with psoriatic arthritis. Such patients do not need to go to the main island of Taiwan for medical treatment due to skin conditions, saving them money and time spent on transportation. As of June 2022, there have been 29 consultations and 71 visits, which have been highly praised by locals. In addition, about NT$140 million in medical expenses have been placed in the Matsu area in 2021 and public satisfaction is as high as 90%.
According to Dr. Po-Chang Lee, Director General of the NHIA, in 2022, the NHIA is actively promoting specialized healthcare services over telemedicine, adding cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, and thoracic specialties to existing dermatology, ophthalmology, ENT, and emergency medical services. By promoting telemedicine along with the Virtual NHI Card, the NHIA can provide more local specialized healthcare services, bridging the gap for medical care in outlying islands.
