On November 29, the NHIA held the NHI MediCloud System Workshop where it showcased the friendly interface, customization, and visualization functions of the newly upgraded NHI MediCloud System 2.0. It invited 3 benchmark hospitals to share their experiences in using the MediCloud system. Minister of Health and Welfare Dr. Hsueh Jui-yuan delivered the opening remarks and pointed out because the NHIA quickly established the notifications functions for Travel history, occupation, contact history, and cluster information (TOCC) on the MediCloud by collecting information from different departments within 48 hours from the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic. TOCC became an important tool for first-line medical personnel for stopping the spread of the virus. The MediCloud will be further improved with more friendly, diverse functionality for medical practitioners in the near future.

Aiming to ensure the safety of patients and enhance healthcare quality, the NHIA established the NHI PharmaCloud System in 2013, and this system was expanded to become the NHI MediCloud system in 2016. The MediCloud allows physicians to quickly query 12 categories of a patient’s medical information, including tests and examinations, surgeries, and other information most needed for medical consultation. The NHIA has also used innovative technology to provide active reminder functions in the MediCloud, such as those for drug interactions, so that physicians and pharmacists can have an appropriate understanding of patient medical conditions and drug safety. The MediCloud has also added the "Hepatitis B, C Area" in accord with national policies. By integrating screening data from the Health Promotion Administration, the MediCloud provides patients’ last records of the hepatitis B and C hepatitis medication and examinations and tests, in order to detect and treat hepatitis C early in the disease. Kaohsiung Medical University Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital used smart devices and the MediCloud data to make Kaohsiung City's Taoyuan District the first district in Taiwan where hepatitis C has been eradicated among permanent residents, making it a perfect example of the benefits of the system. In addition, the NHIA was awarded with the PwC’s 2022 (6th) Taiwan Sustainability Impact Award - Bronze Award in the Social Innovation Category for its video “Eliminating Hepatitis C through the Power of Technology; NHI for a Sustainable Taiwan,” which is another recognition for the MediCloud.

According to statistics from the NHIA, about 1.2 million inquiries are made on the MediCloud system every day. The system is also queried by medical staff for 88% of patients upon seeking medical treatment or picking up prescriptions. From the launch of TOCC in 2020 to date, over 1.99 billion inquiries have been made.

On the 10th anniversary of the launch of the NHI MediCloud, the NHIA released the MediCloud System 2.0, with a single-entry page, a more powerful search, reorganizing the classifications and operations of tabs, and improving user friendliness. Also, the login authority of medical personnel has been increased, so that the MediCloud can be fully used by all categories of the front-line medical personnel. The MediCloud System 2.0 also provides functions for "customizing" the system's default display tabs and fields according to user needs, making it much more user-oriented. In addition, the MediCloud System 2.0 has visualized complicate medication and tests and examinations, making it easier for doctors, pharmacists, and medical personnel to read and understand, which facilitates more speedier and more effective diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Po-Chang Lee, Director General of the NHIA, said that MediCloud will continue to be optimized. It will incorporate the Virtual NHI Card and also expand to include information such as medical device records and its lifetime maximum coverage amount, making the MediCloud services even more complete. The NHI MediCloud System, which combines digital technology and big data management, is estimated to have reduced repeated drug expenses by about NT$10.97 billion from 2014 to 2021 and reduced cost of repeated examinations by about 1.64 billion points from 2018 to 2021. Moreover, by integrating patients’ important medical information and accelerating hierarchization of medical responsibilities with copayments, the National Health Insurance improves the quality of health care, making the NHI a pillar of health for the people of Taiwan.
