By using digital technology to break down barriers, the NHIA has narrowed the information gap in healthcare through its Virtual NHI Card. 363,582 people as of November 30, 2022 hold Virtual NHI Cards, and 967 contracted hospitals have completed the Virtual NHI Card system interface test.

The NHIA held a "Virtual NHI Card Application Demonstration Workshop” on December 13, to which it invited medical institutions with good implementation results to share on the application of the Virtual NHI Card in home health care, telemedicine, and video consultations. Participants were invited to experience simulated scenarios from the future application of the Virtual NHI card, such as one-stop medical services, electronic prescriptions integrated at community pharmacies, mobile payment, and other such innovative medical service models.

In order to make it easier for the public to use the Virtual NHI Card, the NHIA has held 16 "Virtual NHI Card Local Training" events in rural areas and offshore islands. A total of 271 video-communication points were connected online simultaneously, with a total of nearly 2,000 participants and about 900 applicants for Virtual NHI Cards.

The NHIA, speaking on user surveys, said that over 85% of the public agree that the online application process for the Virtual NHI Card is convenient, that authorization is easy, and that personal data protection mechanisms are secure. Over 80% of the surveyed users agree that the Virtual NHI Card is very convenient in the three major fields of video consultations, telemedicine, and home health care. More than 70% of medical professionals and staff surveyed also agree that there are shorter reading times for Virtual NHI Cards compared to physical cards, and medical services are more convenient.
