Nine midwestern state senators and representatives of Taiwan Friendship Caucus visited the NHIA on the morning of December 19, 2022.
During the meeting, Director General Lee explained the NHI system, existing policies, and results of digital health implementations to the guests personally. The guests had high praise for Taiwan's NHI system and pointed out that Taiwan's success should be used as reference for their states' health insurance reforms.
Taiwan's National Health Insurance successfully provides the same health insurance for both the poor and rich in the country, saving them from poor because of illness and from being sick because of poverty. In recent years, the NHIA has strengthened the application of NHI big data and digital health technologies. Director General Lee said, “The U.S. has long been paying attention to Taiwan's NHI system. Every year, senators, congresspersons, and congressional assistants visit Taiwan to learn about Taiwan's NHI results and challenges. During the visit, both sides exchanged experiences and concerns, sharing ideas because health knows no borders.” Director General Lee passionately reported on the workings and results of NHI in Taiwan, which was launched back in March 1, 1995, as well as on related policies and measures. Furthermore, Director General Lee introduced the English NHI book published by Springer in August.
In response to the trends of the digital age, Director General Lee also shared the innovative applications of MediCloud, NHI APP, the Virtual NHI Card, and AI model applications implemented in recent years. He explained the digital health care applications the NHIA implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic have safeguarded people's health.
The issues about Taiwan's rural healthcare, mental healthcare, drug addiction problems, and information security were enthusiastically discussed. The delegation affirmed Taiwan's healthcare system which has been implemented for 27 years, and continues to act as a model for health insurance systems around the world.
