If you have an emergency medical need abroad during the coming Spring Festival, you can claim your self-paid medical expenses back. The documentation to claim the expenses includes the application form and the related documents. You can mail or submit in person to the NHIA's regional division that your insured unit is subject to. You may also go to the NHIA website (https://gov.tw/hHx) to submit your application, and then print the form out and sent it with the related documents to the NHIA's regional division.

The reimbursement of the oversea medical expenses will be reviewed and paid at maximum of the mean value of the previous-quarter reimbursement paid to domestic hospital and clinics. Considering this reimbursement is a partial subsidy, therefore, a travel medical insurance for sudden illnesses is strongly advised.

Meanwhile, the NHIA also points out that for those who receive health care in Taiwan without an NHI card, please ask a refund to the healthcare provider with their NHI card within 10 days (holidays excluded). If these cases ask the NHIA for reimbursement, they cannot have the full refund they paid to their healthcare provider but be reimbursed according to the items on the receipt and the NHI fee schedule. The aforementioned cases shall have non-attributable grounds if they claim to the NHIA.
