The virtual NHI card has been used for telemedicine in remote areas since 2021. By using virtual NHI cards for telemedicine, the needs for specialized healthcare in offshore islands and remote areas could be fulfilled, not only saving the travel time of the local residents but making healthcare accessibility enhanced. 

The NHIA has also implemented the Integrated Delivery Services (IDS) for residents in remote areas since 1999, providing outpatient care and mobile health care to 50 remote villages and islands in order to secure the healthcare accessibility in the meantime.
