The prevalence rate of hepatitis C in Taiwan is around 2% to 4%, which is higher than nearby east Asian countries. In response to Taiwan's Early Elimination of Hepatitis C by 2025 policy (WHO aims to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030), National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA) has added a category of Hepatitis B & Hepatitis C in the NHI MediCloud System compiling all medical visit records, medication records, and exam results of patients seeking medical care for hepatitis C in different facilities. With the compiled data, doctors can quickly obtain a comprehensive understanding of all the treatments a specific patient with hepatitis C is taking, so the treatment will not be interrupted.

At the same time, NHIA has included a newly developed oral medication for hepatitis C in NHI benefits and loosen relevant prescription restrictions so that doctors of all specialties are allowed to prescribe the said drug and patients can receive proper treatments within their vicinity. Patients with difficulties visiting a medical facility in person can receive medical services using the Virtual NHI Card. By the end of July, 2022, a total of 1,083 medical facilities have adopted newly developed oral medications for the treatment of 220,000 patients; of which, about 143,000 patients took the newly developed oral medication for hepatitis C and the treatment successful rate is 98.4%.

In response to the United Nation's sustainable development goals of good health and well-being, reduced inequalities, and partnership for the goals, NHIA endeavors to eliminate hepatitis C and has successfully controlled the situation of hepatitis C using digital technologies and the latest medical advancements; we look forward to sharing Taiwan’s experience with the world. In the future, NHIA shall continue to establish new strategies in response to societal and technological advancements to contribute to sustainable development and put all our efforts in safeguarding the health of each and every person in Taiwan.
