- This month's top three research areas include a total of 37 publications on tumors, 11 publications on the circulatory system, and 5 publications on the nervous system. These findings have been published in "Cancers" and "PLOS One" journals.
- Selected Paper in March:The patients with traumatic brain injury have higher risk of migraine in Taiwan.
Patients with brain trauma suffer from many complications and sequelae, one of which is migraine. Unfortunately, fewer studies have examined the association between brain injury severity and the occurrence of migraine, and fewer studies examined the effects of different treatments. A research team from Fu Jen Catholic University, Yatong Hospital and the National Defense Medical Center of the Armed Forces General Hospital used Taiwan's health insurance claims data from 2000 to 2017 and observed 180,000 patients and four times of patients without brain trauma injury as the control group.
The study found that the rates of migraine in the brain trauma injury group and the control group were 0.36% and 0.23% respectively. After controlling the relevant variables, patients with traumatic brain injury had a 1.48 times higher risk of having migraine compared to the control group. However, there was no statistically significant difference when comparing patients with and without surgery or rehabilitation.
The author reminds readers that traumatic brain injury and migraine in this study were defined by International Classification of Diseases code, which may lead to potential inaccuracy in diagnosis. To enhance accuracy, this study only included cases diagnosed by neurologists or otolaryngologists. The frequency of rehabilitation treatment cannot be obtained in this study, so it could not reflect the intensity of treatment. Future prospective studies may be necessary to explore this issue with better measurements.
Highlight of MAR (2023) :The main focus this month is on predicting cancer diagnoses and assessing the success rates of various treatment methods.
