In view of disasters caused by Typhoon Danas on July 5, the National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA) has implemented the following measures:
I. The disaster victims' (including group insurance applicants') NHI premium will be subsidized for six months: Regular NHI premiums payable by the disaster victims shall be covered by the central government for six months starting from the month when the typhoon struck.
II. Disaster victims who meet the determination criteria for financial difficulties are eligible to the following assistance regarding their NHI premium payments for a year:
- Exemption from overdue payment reminders.
- Exemption from being referred to an administrative execution agency for overdue payments.
- Exemption from belated surcharges for delayed premium payments.
- Eligibility to apply for an interest-free NHI relief fund loan for the outstanding premium payments.
III. The NHIA shall allocate special funds from the NHI Donation Account to subsidize the outstanding premium payments for disaster victims who meet the determination criteria for financial difficulties.
IV. When disaster victims are unable to present their NHI cards when seeking medical attention, the facility may register them in the exceptional care registry and proceed to provide relevant care. In the case where medications or prescriptions are damaged or lost, doctors may issue a new prescription.
V. Individuals seeking medical attention within three months of the disaster (i.e. between July 5 and October 7) who are deemed by medical professionals to be receiving treatment due to the disaster are eligible to a subsidy for their medical expenses:
- Individuals eligible for the NHI program: The subsidy covers the copayment and meal expenses during hospitalization.
- Individuals not eligible for the NHI program: The subsidy covers the medical expenses within the scope of the NHI program and meal expenses during hospitalization.
