World Health Day is celebrated annually on April 7. The 2026 theme, "Together for health. Stand with science." calls on the global community to champion scientific evidence and cross-sector collaboration. This initiative promotes the health of humans, animals, plants, and the ecosystem, embracing the "One Health" concept.
Taiwan's National Health Insurance (NHI) covers nearly 100% of the population, ensuring accessible, affordable and person-centered medical services. Guided by scientific principles, the NHI Administration (NHIA) implements policies for disease prevention, chronic disease management, and public health crisis response-such as during the COVID-19 pandemics-to ensure continuous care for all.
- The One Health Approach: Taiwan's NHI goes beyond medical coverage to serve as a foundation for data integration and resource allocation. Through the NHI card and the MediCloud system, healthcare professionals are able to inquire about medication records to ensure patient safety. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the NHI app enabled citizens to check mask purchases, vaccination records, and screening results, supporting epidemic prevention. At the same time, by integrating medical records and travel histories, digital footprints were used to build a comprehensive safety network.
- Disease Prevention and Management: the NHIA has implemented comprehensive measures, including expanding cancer screening and treatment services, including new medicines aligned with international guidelines, and integrating genetic testing and precision medicine to enhance personalized care. It also provides full coverage for oral antiviral treatments for hepatitis C, reducing treatment costs and accelerating Taiwan's achievement of WHO hepatitis C elimination targets. In addition, through the "888 Program," lifestyle counseling and tailored health education are integrated to strengthen chronic disease care and enable a continuous service.
Health does not only affect an individual, but is also closely connected to global well-being. From hepatitis C elimination and precision cancer treatment to chronic disease management, the NHIA has collaborated with various sectors to build a comprehensive, science-based health management network. This protects citizens' health while aligning with the World Health Day 2026 vision, "Together for health. Stand with science." Taiwan is committed to advancing the One Health approach, and is ready to share our experiences with countries and regions, contributing to a healthier global community.
