According to the latest statistics of the National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA), a total of 131,239 applications were successfully reimbursed by National Health Insurance on unexpected injuries and diseases that were treated locally overseas in an emergency, a negative growth of 1.72% compared to the same period from last year. The approved amount totaled NTD 340 million, a growth of 2.08%.
The NHIA would like to remind you that if you experience injuries or diseases overseas that are in need of medical attention, you may apply for a reimbursement with the NHIA regional Division in the location where the affiliation you are enrolled with (for the addresses and phones, see the table below) on the day of outpatient or emergency care or within six months following hospital discharge. In your application, you should enclose the completed application form for the reimbursement of prepaid medical expenses (you may download it from the NHIA website), the original copy of the medical care expense receipt and checklist of all expenses, the certificate of diagnosis, and relevant travel records. If you are hospitalized in mainland China for five days (excluding the date of hospital discharge), the certificate of diagnosis and the original copy of the medical expense receipt need to be notarized by a notary public in mainland China and verified by the Straits Exchange Foundation after you return to Taiwan before you submit the application. All amounts shall be reimbursed against receipts and shall be limited to the mean value paid to a domestic medical center on a quarterly basis at maximum. The ceiling for the latest quarter (between January and March 2016) is NTD 1,993 per outpatient visit; NTD 3,471 per visit to the emergency room; and NTD 8,114 per hospitalized day. If you travel to a country where medical care is relatively expensive, such as Australia, Japan, Europe, and North and South America, it is advised that you should purchase additional insurance to cover sudden diseases overseas to make up for the insufficiency.
It is our hope that everyone can leave home happily and come home safely.
