On March 10, 2022, the NHIA agreed to extend qualifications of palliative care recipients, including terminally ill seniors, terminal myelodysplastic syndromes patients, patients who satisfy the conditions under Article 14, Paragraph 1, Subparagraphs 2 to 5 of the Patient Right to Autonomy Act, patients with rare diseases, and patients with predicted limited life. This new policy may start on May 1, 2022, and is expected to benefit 700 patients.

In addition, from March 1, 2022, the NHIA has included residential long-term care institutions and veteran homes under the Veterans Affairs Council into the scope of palliative home-care institutions, allowing terminally ill patients to receive palliative care in long-term care institutions. This will prevent terminal patients and their families from traveling back and forth between hospitals and their residences, helping the seniors aging in place and improving the quality of care at the end of life.
